In order to train as an EMDR therapist, it is a requirement that the person is a trained mental health professional with accreditation from their professional body (e.g. British Psychological Society and HPC, GMC (Psychiatrists), UKCP, BABCP, BACP, IACP, etc).

The EMDR practitioners' training starts with seven days of initial training spread over a period of time. Some trainers offer this as 3+1+3 days while others offer 2+2+2+1 days. There is also a university-based course (see below). Your knowledge and skills increase with each level. Although we encourage you to get experience during your initial training, only individuals who have completed all seven days can be considered trained to conduct EMDR therapy.

Upon completing the seven days initial training you can work towards accreditation as a Practitioner through supervision of your EMDR practise. Whilst there will be a requirement to attend for supervision, accreditation is awarded based on your competence in all areas of EMDR practise.

EMDR Consultants differ from Practitioners in that they are also accredited to provide supervision and consultation to individuals who are working towards becoming Accredited Practitioners. Those wanting to seek accreditation as an EMDR consultant must: be an accredited EMDR Practitioner, have completed the consultants' training and met all the consultants' criteria.
