Check List for Parents.
Below is a list of questions to ask before engaging in EMDR treatment for your child. You would ideally require the answer to be positive to all seven questions to ensure that your child/adolescent will be treated by a qualified practitiner with the required training in EMDR.
1. What is the registered profession of the therapist? (E.g. psychiatrist, family therapist, child psychotherapist, social worker etc. Clinical and educational psychologists tend to be 'Chartered' psychologists with the British Psychological Society.) Registration ensures that a therapist is bound by a strict code of conduct and in case of complaints there is a process through their registering organisation. Parents can verify this information by contacting the various organisations.
2. How much experience has the therapist had in working with children and adolescents?
3. Is the therapist 'CRB' (Criminal Records Bureau) checked and has a certificate to prove this? (This is a check to ensure that a therapist has never been convicted of a violent offence against a child.) Please note that this is called 'Disclosure Scotland' in Scotland.
4. Is the therapist a member of the EMDR Association of UK and Ireland and trained to Level 2?
5. Has the therapist completed the EMDR CHILD training?
6. Is the therapist receiving regular supervision from an accredited EMDR Consultant?
7. Lastly, having checked the above points, remember that in addition to the skills and expereince of the therapist, it is important that he/she is able to form a therapeutic relationship with you and your child.
